Feminism

I had a hard time thinking about what to write about for this third post so I decided to go for a topic that is very dear to me. That topic is feminism. Simply put feminism is about equal rights for women. However today the word “feminist” is a dirty word. There are people who believe that it means you hate men and think that women are superior to them. Yes there are people who believe this even in the year 2014. I think this simply because people don’t actually know the true meaning of feminism. A great example of this gross misunderstanding would be the campaign Women Against Feminism. This consists of women posting pictures of themselves holding up pieces of paper explaining why they don’t need feminism. Some of these reasons are: they don’t hate men, men respect them, they are not oppressed, the wage gap is a myth, they take responsibility for their actions and they don’t believe cat-calling is harassment. These women are unaware that thanks to feminism they can receive a third level education, vote and have a career. These women need feminism as much as anyone does. Of course they are not the only ones who have misinterpreted the meaning of feminism.

Another website which takes a negative view on this and on women in general is the website Return of Kings. Their articles about women tend to be offensive in the extreme. Some examples of these articles are: Street Harassment Is A Myth Invented By Socially Retarded White Women, Why Fat Women Should Be Sent to Jail, How To Convince A Girl To Get An Abortion, All Girls Like Rough Sex and one that got up my nose in particular, Girls With Short Hair Are Damaged. The writers on this site are also think that feminism is a hate movement. They believe that everything a woman says and does should be about attracting a man. They think women should always dress a certain way and behave a certain way to attract a man. In the article Girls With Short Hair Are Damaged the author wrote: “Short hair is a near-guarantee that a girl will be more abrasive, more masculine, and more deranged.” Well I have short hair and I’m not crazy. I know lots of girls with short hair who aren’t crazy. The length of one’s hair does not define their mental state. All my friends and family love my hair this way some even encouraging me to cut it shorter. My male friends say I’m much cuter with this haircut and advised me to never let it grow long again. The reason for this pessimistic stance on the pixie crop is because it is deemed unattractive and women should not do anything that makes them unattractive to men. That is why they are seen as damaged. They wrote something similar about women who have tattoos and piercings. I think its safe to say that these men are misogynists. Women do not live their lives for men and men do not live their lives for women.

Sexism is alive and well in society. Women are not the only victims and men are not the only perpetrators. Feminism relieves both sexes of negative stereotypes surrounding them.  A man should be able to express his feelings and cry without being labelled as weak or gay. A girl should be able to be assertive without being labelled as a bitch. A man should be able to refrain from sex without being labelled as a loser and a woman should be able to have as much sex as she wants without being labelled as a whore. This is why feminism is important. This is why its a big deal for me.
